It finally happened. After years and years yelling “FREEBIRD” at so many different concerts, I finally got to hear it played live by the band that started it all. I got to accompany an economic development team to the Springs to meet with leaders from VENU, who are building mid-size amphitheaters around the country and are looking to expand in Northern Colorado. We were able to take a tour of the adjoining restaurants and dance hall, have a bite to eat in one of the suites, and watch the show from one of the fire pits. It was fun to meet the owner, JW Roth, have a picture in front of the sign, and have a passing thought of taking one of the monogrammed “Roth”blankets from the suite. 38 Special opened for Lynyrd Skynyrd. And, finally, got to see an almost 15 minute rendition of “Free Bird” to close the night. Finished up the whirlwind of a day at the rooftop bar with the crew.
